England Cricket coach: Ricky Ponting is enjoying his time as the coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. The former Australian captain has turned down the opportunity to become England’s new coach. According to sources, Ponting has informed the ECB’s Director of Cricket, Rob Key, that he is uninterested in the position. According to the article, the ECB was receptive to the notion of Ponting continuing his involvement with the Delhi IPL team. Despite this, Ponting declined the offer.
Ottis Gibson, the former coach of the West Indies and South Africa, has emerged as a contender for the Test position. The ECB’s new leadership wants to separate the red-ball and white-ball duties.
Gibson, who is 53 years old, has already managed two international teams, the West Indies and South Africa. Gibson has also been in charge of Bangladesh’s fast bowlers for the past two years. He has twice been a member of the England Cricket Set-UP. Between 2015 and 2017, he was England’s fast-bowling coach, having previously held the position between 2007 and 2010.
However, both Ponting and another key target, ex-Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene, have made it obvious that they are unavailable.
Former England opener Nick Knight is another name being canvassed in the ECB’s corridors, according to sources. A knight is a viable option for England Cricket’s white-ball squad. Knight has appeared in 100 One-Day Internationals for England.
The ECB has a number of decisions to make, including a new coaching structure. The new ECB set-up is also in charge of naming a new captain for England’s Test team. Following Joe Root’s departure, Ben Stokes is expected to take over as England’s new Test captain.
