Dom Sibley, Matt Parkinson, and Saqib Mahmood have been selected in the England Lion’s squad for the upcoming tour to Australia next month.
The Lions will play against England’s senior squad during the early stages of the Ashes tour. Besides, they will also be playing a four-day Test match against Australia A before returning home on December 16. It will be the first Lions tour for almost two years because of the pandemic. Their last overseas trip was also to Australia, at the start of 2020.
Dom Sibley was dropped from England’s Test team after his poor returns in the first two Tests against India. He was replaced with Haseeb Hameed at the top of the order. Sibley wasn’t event included in the Ashes squad as Zak Crawley has been selected as the backup opener. Sibley has also missed out on a central contract. He, however, has been selected in the Lions’ squad. Sibley will have the chance to re-establish his credentials with the Lions.
Besides, Parkinson and Mahmood have also been named in the 14-man Lions squad, thanks to their excellent home returns. The England leg-spinner took 36 Championship wickets at an average of 20.55 for Lancashire. Mahmood, on the other hand, has managed to pick 28 wickets for the Red Rose County and also performed exceptionally well during the ODI series against Pakistan.
Interestingly, the selectors haven’t selected Liam Livingstone in the squad as they wanted him to give some rest after a hectic year. For the unversed, Livingstone will be plying his trade in T10 later in UAE after the ICC T20 World Cup.
The Lions will depart for Australia on November 4 along with England’s Test specialists. The captain of the party is yet to be announced along with the coaching team. The date for the four-day match against Australia ‘A’ is also yet to be confirmed.
