England vs India 2nd Test, Day 5: Despite Ollie Robinson sending Rishabh Pant back to the pavilion, India were all smiling at Lunch on day 5, thanks to a wonderful 75-run partnership between Jasprit Bumrah (34*) and Mohammad Shami (56*) for the ninth wicket. Shane Warne questioned England’s team defensive tactics on Day 5 as it helped Shami and Bumrah extend the lead further.
At Lunch, India was well placed at 298-8 with the lead going past the 270-run mark. The team found it suitable to declare the innings with the figures on the scoreboard. Reacting to England’s tactics on Day 5 of the England vs India Lord’s Test match, former Australian spinner Shane Warne wrote on Twitter:
“Horrible tactics from Eng. Why don’t the bowlers say no I don’t want 5/6 fielders on the fence – as how am I getting the batsman out skip. Will Eng go for these runs ? Remember when NZ set 270 of 75 overs & Eng never considered the chase. India win or draw for me.”
Warne criticized England’s defensive approach in the Test. He further predicted that India might go on to win the Test or it will result in a draw.
The wicket of Rishabh Pant gave England the upper hand in the team. However, M Shami and Jasprit Bumrah then stitched a stellar partnership to make a complete turnaround. The duo added 75 runs for the ninth wicket to extend India’s lead. M Shami went onto register the second fifty of his Test cricket career, while Jasprit Bumrah scored 34 off 64 balls. Both remained unbeaten at the crease and India declared the innings at a healthy total leading by 272 runs. It will be interesting to see if the duo’s stint could prove to be fortuitous for the team and vanish out the possibility of England’s chance of winning the Test.
