England allrounder Moeen Ali has been recalled in the England squad ahead of the second Test of the ongoing England vs India five-match Test series at the Lord’s that begins on Thursday (August 12). Ali is expected to join the squad on Tuesday. He is likely to be named into the playing XI for the game.
The off-spinning all-rounder is currently engaged in leading the campaign of Birmingham Phoenix in the ongoing The Hundred tournament. Moeen Ali has been in phenomenal form in the tournament and his recent star performance came in the last game when he smashed 59 runs off 28 deliveries to lead his side to a thumping 93-run win to take them to the top of the standings. The team has won three consecutive games in the last three instances. Adding the victory of their opening game, they have registered four wins and two losses in total. Ali has individually amassed 189 runs in the tournament so far in six matches.
Moeen Ali’s entry into the squad with his current form will boost the England team, which is struggling to find balance in the team owing to the absence of Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes. He will serve as a frontline spinner while strengthening the middle-order of the batting lineup.
The 34-year-old all-rounder also delivered a phenomenal performance during the Tests between the two teams in Chennai earlier this year. He clinched eight wickets in the second Test match, but then returned home in accordance with England’s rest and rotation policy. It will be his first red-ball game in six months.
The England coach Chris Silverwood has also indicated the inclusion of Haseeb Hameed for the second Test.
The rain-marred first Test between the two teams at Trent Bridge, Nottingham ended in a draw.
