Enoch Nkwe has stepped down from his role as the assistant coach of Cricket South Africa (CSA) for the Proteas, the board announced on Tuesday. He was holding the position of the South Africa men’s team coach since December 20219. He has also served as the Team Director briefly.
CSA stated that they made ‘every effort to retain his services’ but Enoch Nkwe resigned to ‘focus on personal growth and professional development’. The board has, however, kept their doors open for him if he ever has a change of heart.
“The Board engaged with Enoch to explore whether there was a way to retain his services but this was unsuccessful. During these discussions, he also raised concerns about the functioning and culture of the team environment.
“The Board will be taking the necessary steps to investigate and address the issues raised by Enoch. We will not be commenting further on this until the process has been completed,” CSA stated in an official release.
Enoch has been associated with the board for over twenty years as a player and then as a coach. He has played for Gauteng and Highveld Lions and later joined the Gauteng Lions as their Head Coach.
As per sources, a possible reason for Nkwe’s resignation was his difference of opinion with Head Coach Mark Boucher. Reportedly, Boucher did not let Nkwe get too involved in providing inputs to the technical aspects of the game and the latter was mostly involved in training sessions.
“It is deeply disappointing to lose someone of Enoch’s calibre at this time, but we fully understand and respect his decision. We are comforted by the fact that he remains committed to SA cricket, and hope that he will be back serving the game that we all love. He has been and continues to be an inspiration to young cricketers and coaches,” CSA Board Chair, Lawson Naidoo said.
The board is looking for a replacement for him ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, which is just around the corner.
Meanwhile, South Africa is currently involved in the preparation for their upcoming Sri Lanka tour. The party is expected to depart for the country on Wednesday.
