Providing an update on the England ODI squad for the series against India, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) informed on Thursday that an injured England skipper Eoin Morgan has been dropped from the squad. He would be unavailable for the last two matches of the series. In Morgan’s absence, Jos Buttler will lead the team.
Morgan suffered an injury in his hand during Tuesday’s ODI clash in Pune, in which he contributed 22 runs to the team’s total, only to be outplayed by the hosts and lose the match by 66 runs. He required four stitches for the split webbing between his right thumb and index finger.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings, who hurt his already troubled shoulder during the first ODI clash between the two teams on Tuesday, would also be unavailable for the next game. However, he is expected to return for the final knockout of the series. A final word on his availability for the match will be out soon.
Among other updates for the England ODI squad, right-handed batsman Liam Livingstone is all set to make his debut, while top-ranking T20I batsman Dawid Malan has also made himself available for selection.
“I had the hand re-dressed before the start of training today but it quickly became apparent that I found myself protecting the injury and getting into the wrong positions to catch the ball,” Morgan said.
“There’s nowhere to hide on the field in international cricket these days, especially in limited-over formats so it didn’t require any great thought to make myself unavailable.
“It was a freak injury and it’s extremely frustrating but there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s now just a case of letting the cut heal. I have every confidence in Jos and the rest of the squad coping without me.”
