Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag feels that Rohit Sharma could be relieved from his T20I captaincy for India. Sehwag feels that this step would help the latter to manage the workload in leading the Indian cricket team.
Since becoming India’s captain, Rohit hasn’t been able to participate in every game because of injuries and time management issues.
“If the Indian team management has someone else in mind as captain in the T20 format, then I think, Rohit (Sharma) could be relieved and the following can be taken into consideration going forward,” Sehwag told PTI in an interview.
Sehwag said that Sharma is still the best option if the team management maintains its current practice of having one captain to lead India throughout the three forms.
“I still think Rohit Sharma is the best candidate if the Indian think-tank continues to follow the same approach, which is to let one individual lead India in all three formats,” Sharma said.
In an era where a chock-a-block international schedule places more emphasis than ever on injury management and mental weariness, Sehwag has made an important point concerning dual captaincy.
When Australian selectors chose Steve Waugh to lead the ODI team at the time while Mark Taylor led the Test squad, the idea of a divided leadership was born.
Australia and England opted two-captain policy
While Australia did see tremendous success following this path, a similar situation occurred in England when the ECB appointed Joe Root as the Test captain and Eoin Morgan led the white-ball team.
The cricket eco-system in India differs slightly from that of Australia or England, where many power centers across forms coexist more amicably than in the subcontinent.
Sehwag asserted that his top three choices among the batters for the tournament would be Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and KL Rahul. His choice was were despite many permutations and combinations in playing XI recently in the anticipation of the T20 World Cup in Australia.
