Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir believes that a quality bowler like Ravichandran Ashwin not finding a place in the white-ball squad of the Indian cricket team is ‘very unfortunate’.
R Ashwin has been making headlines from the beginning of this year due to his heroic performances during team India’s Test outings. He was the knight in shining armour during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scalping 12 wickets in 6 innings and contributing match-saving runs for the Indian team.
The fastest 350 Test wicket-taker was the match-winner of the second Test of England’s ongoing Test series against India, working miracles with both his bat and the ball. The spinner scalped eight wickets in the match and totalled his Test wickets tally to 394. He is now eying his 400th Test wickets in the next game, achieving which would make him the second-fastest bowler to reach the milestone after Muttiah Muralitharan.
Given all these topliner performances, Gautam Gambhir strongly feels that the Indian cricket team should include the match-winning player in the limited-overs squad as well, aside from giving him opportunities only in the Test format.
“Someone who is coming close to taking 400 wickets and at the same time getting five Test hundreds and still not being part of the white-ball scheme of things is very unfortunate. He is just a class act,” Gambhir said on the show Cricket Connected.
“He is just a quality bowler and his subtle variations. The amount of cricket he has played and the longevity he has played with and still the kind of impact he has had, it is just unbelievable,” he added.
R Ashwin played his last ODI and T20I game way back in 2017. He has not featured in any limited-overs game for the national side since that time and has played his T20 format only in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
