Rajasthan Royals released both Steve Smith and Ajinkya Rahane from the squad before the IPL Auctions 2021. In their absence, Sanju Samson has been handed the opportunity to lead the side for the 14th edition of IPL. In a recent interview with Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson told that he knew about the development days before the announcement of the new skipper. He further disclosed that Indian veterans such as Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma all wished him on the accomplishment.
“It was tough keeping it to myself,” he said with a smile. After it was officially announced, a few text messages gave the 26-year-old “special little moments” to cherish. “I got some nice congratulatory messages from Virat bhai, Rohit bhai and Mahi bhai,” Samson recalled.
This will be the first time when Samson would be leading a team in the Indian Premier League. Though, he has a lot of experience as a captain, having led Kerala, its U-19 team and also the India U-19 team in the past.
“I look at captaincy as more of a service to the team. A captain is someone who is there to provide the right kind of atmosphere that every individual requires in a team and backs each one of them. It’s a lot about man-management skills—giving positive feedback to your players, understanding where they are coming from. The fact that my team and the franchise trust me to do this job gives great confidence that there is something in me. I firmly believe that a captain is only good if the team is good,” he told Hindustan Times.
Rajasthan Royals will play their first game against King XI Punjab on 12th April, 2021.
