French batsman Gustav McKeon has registered an impeccable record as he became the youngest player to hit a T20I century. He achieved the remarkable feat against Switzerland at the ongoing Region Qualifier championship match for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Gustav McKeon smashed an impressive knock of 109 runs in 61 balls at the age of 18 years and 280 days. Previously, the record was held by Afghanistani batsman Hazratullah Zazai who smashed 162 runs against Ireland in 2019 at the age of 20 years and 162 days.
Gustav McKeon in spectacular form
Gustav McKeon seems to be in spectacular touch at the ongoing championship. He smashed a stunning knock of 76 runs in the last match against the Czech Republic. McKeon stands as the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 185 runs on the board.
However, the heroics of McKeon went in vain as Switzerland overpowered France and chased down the total of 158 runs in 19.3 overs. Skipper Faheem Nazir lead the charge and anchored the chase by scoring a splendid knock of 67 runs.
With Switzerland earning two points after defeating France, the two sides stand with the same points in the second position in Group 2. Norway is leading Group 2 with two consecutive wins. The Czech Republic and Estonia stand fourth and fifth in the table respectively.
In Group 1, Austria and Guernsey are unbeaten and lead the standings. Luxembourg along with Bulgaria and Slovenia are yet to register a victory in the European Qualifier.
ICC has taken a significant step to recognize and provide an opportunity to the European nations for their participation in the T20 World Cup. The winner of this Sub-Regional Championship will join Italy, Jersey and Germany for the European Qualifier 2023. Ireland and Scotland who failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup will also join the Qualifiers.
