Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting who led Australia to 2003 & 2007 World Cup title has an advice of caution for the Indian team. The 45-year-old spoke about the spinner Nathan Lyon, stating him to be a threat for the Indian team in the Test series.

Lyon is just nine wickets away from becoming Australia’s third-highest wicket-taker in the Test cricket, is also the second spinner after Shane Warne.

He dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara in the first inning, now has 391 wickets under his sleeve, also took down Pujara for the 10th time in Test cricket. Cheteshwar Pujara looked really good in front of the Aussie bowlers except for the time when Lyon came into bowl and made him struggle.

Ponting praised the spinner for his success against India in the longest format, especially at home. “He’s had as much success as any spinner, I think, against India over the years,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.

“He’s got¬†Virat Kohli¬†out (in Tests) more than anybody in the history of the game, he looked like he troubled Pujara a lot today. He builds pressure, he bowls very few bad balls so he’ll be a massive threat for them,” he added.

Ponting went on to elaborate as to why bowlers like Nathan Lyon manage to find success and win matches for Australia.

“When he creates the angle from wide and angles back in, that really only challenges the inside half of the bat and a glove whereas if he can get it out a little bit wider it brings the catch at slip in play,” said Ponting.

“It brings a bat-pad off-side catch into play and if you get the extra bounce, like Pujara’s wicket, you can still get the wicket at leg slip as well,” he added.

Indian team was dismissed for 244 runs in the first innings with the pacers taking 8 wickets combined while Lyon took only one wicket.

Mitchell Starc took the most 4/53 in his spell while Patt Cummins took three wickets. In response, Australia is currently batting on 167/9, still trailing by 77 runs.
