IND vs ENG: India would certainly be the happier side at the end of day 1 of the fifth Test match between India and England on Friday at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham. At the end of the 1st session of Day 1, England was all over India. India had lost 4 wickets for just 71 runs and 5 wickets for 98 runs.
Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara made a decent start. Gill started aggressively as he smashed 4 fours in his 17-run knock in 24 balls. However, once again, he was guilty of converting the start into a big score.
Cheteshwar Pujara made 13 runs in 46 balls before becoming India’s second scalp of the day. James Anderson picked both the wickets, while Matty Potts had Hanuma Vihari (20 off 53) leg before 5 overs later.
Fans were hoping that this would be the innings when Virat Kohli would turn his fortunes around. He looked promising with how started the innings but, unfortunately, got dragged on after scoring 11 runs in 19 balls. Shreyas Iyer’s struggles with short-pitch delivery continued as he got out on 15 off 11 balls.
At this stage, India was looking in dire straits and England was hoping to get the team bundled out as soon as possible. However, little did they know what was about to follow. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja joined forces and produced a game-turning 222-run partnership for the 6th wicket.
Pant smashes second century on England soil
Pant smashed another game-changing century in just 89 deliveries. Ravindra Jadeja, on the other hand, gave him valuable support. Pant eventually got out after scoring 146 runs in 111 balls, including 20 fours and 4 sixes but put India in a brilliant position in the game.
Thanks to that partnership, India end the day at 338 for 7 in 73 overs. Ravindra Jadeja is currently unbeaten on 83 off 163 balls, including 10 fours.
