IND vs SA 2nd Test, Day 1: On a pitch that has plenty of bounce and movement, India was bundled out for a 202-run total after winning the toss and opting to bat first on the first day of the second Test at Wanderers Stadium. Regular skipper Virat Kohli opted out of the second Test due to an upper back spasm. Hanuma Vihari has replaced him in the playing XI. KL Rahul has been selected as the captain for the ongoing Test.
KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal were very watchful during the first hour of the play. The duo kept leaving the balls outside of off stump and ensured they send all the full-length delivery to the boundary ropes. India made 36 runs without losing a wicket at drinks on Day 1. However, just after that Marco Jansen sent Mayank Agarwal back to the pavilion on the very first delivery.
South Africa bowled really after that until Lunch. The Proteas asked some tough questions and made great use of the bounce on the surface. Olivier, who is known for taking wickets with his short balls, removed Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane on two consecutive deliveries to leave India reeling from 49 for 1 to 49 for 3.
KL Rahul, however, played exceedingly well as he kept taking India’s innings ahead. He brought up his second half-century of the series in just three innings. Hanuma Vihari looked good for his 20 off 53 before Rabada got him with an awkward bounce on the surface. Rishabh Pant (17 off 43) too failed to convert the start into a big score.
While Thakur (0 off 5) only stayed for 5 balls in the middle. India had lost 7 wickets for just 157 runs and it looked like they would be bundled out at around 180. However, valuable runs from Ravichandran Ashwin (46 off 50) and Jasprit Bumrah (14 off 11) helped India cross the 200-run mark.
Indian bowlers too asked some tough questions in the second innings and didn’t allow easy runs to the visitors. M Shami got the early wicket of Aiden Markam (7 off 12) in the fourth over but that was the only wicket that fell on the first day. South Africa are currently 35 for 1 after 18 overs on IND vs SA 2nd Test, Day 1.
