IND vs SL 2nd T20I: India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has backed Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal after their performance in the second T20I. The coach believes that the players will bounce back in the third T20I. He pointed out that there is no pressure on the players and that they have a free hand.
For Gaikwad and Padikkal, their debut game on Wednesday didn’t really turn out to be how they might have planned it. While opener Gaiwad played a knock of 21 runs off 18 balls, Paddikal chipped in 29 runs off 29 balls playing at No. 3 in the game which the hosts won by four wickets (with two balls remaining).
“When you are going to make your debut for your country, it is always going to be nervous and we know that. The discussion is always to give them a free hand, there is no pressure on them,” Paras Mhambrey said on the batting duo speaking on behalf of the team management.
“Obviously the situation was such … we knew that in terms of batting, we had only five or six batsmen, that we could plan and go ahead with this game, so we focussed on those.
“There were no such instructions on how to play, yes they will be disappointed, but every opportunity they get to represent the country, they will learn,” he said at a virtual press conference.
On Wednesday’s game, playing with a depleted team, which was without some of its key players, including Suryakumar Yadav, Krunal Pandya, and Prithvi Shaw, India posted a modest target of 133 runs losing five wickets. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan was the highest scorer playing a knock of 40 runs in 42 deliveries. Apart from him, only Bhuvneshwar Kumar played a knock of double-digit runs (13*), while others perished posting a single-digit score.
Although victory wasn’t that comfortable for them since the team kept losing wickets at regular intervals, Sri Lanka managed to successfully chase the target within 19.4 overs. Dhanajaya de Silva played a match-winning knock of 40 runs off 34 balls while Minod Bhanuka contributed a handy 36 runs for the cause.
IND vs SL 2nd T20I: ‘Happy with Kuldeep’s results’, says Mhambrey
Mhambrey expressed his satisfaction with Kuldeep Yadav’s performance, who seems to have regained his form. Yadav clinched two wickets in the game. The bowling coach said that his current performance is a good sign for him considering the T20 World Cup. which is just around the corner.
“They are a lot of discussions we had during the period that we spent before the games together, seen the videos, discussing on the plans, and it all boils down to execution. And so, the credit should be given to him.”
He further gave Kuldeep credit for working hard on himself, the outcome of which is evident in his performance.
“…he is in and out of the team for a while now, which he knows, he also knows that he needs to work hard to maintain his position which he is doing, so happy to see that,” he said.
“And I’m very happy with the results that he is getting. I am sure he will take a lot of positives from this since the T20 World Cup is also around the corner, and it really increases his chances to be part of the squad.”
Overall, Mhambrey is happy with the kind of game the players are playing and the progress they are making.
“Pretty happy with their performance and I have seen them in the past in the last few years when I was associated with them, they have been part of the India A set up for a while and very pleased with the way they have progressed.
“They definitely had a lot of potentials and that is the reason, they are representing the country.”
The series-decider match of the T20I series will take place in Colombo today (July 29).
