IND vs SL: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated that the new Test captain of the Indian cricket team will be Rohit Sharma, Insidesport reported on Wednesday. BCCI’s officials and selectors have given a green signal for Rohit Sharma as India’s next Test captain and a cross-format captain.
The announcement will be done next week when the Indian selectors will meet formally for announcing the Indian Test team for the Sri Lanka series.
“The selectors, players, coach, BCCI all are synced on one name & i.e Rohit Sharma. The official announcement on the appointment of Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain will be made after selectors officially meet next week to select the Indian team for the Sri Lanka series”, said a top BCCI official.
Earlier, Virat Kohli had shocked the fans as he announced via his social media about stepping down as Test captain last month. It meant that either Rohit Sharma or possibly KL Rahul would lead the Indian Test team in the future. However, there were concerns about Rohit’s fitness and injury scare. He has struggled with the hamstring injury, but the coaches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru gave a green flag on Rohit’s fitness.
“I’ve been off for a while and didn’t play for two months. I was back home, though, and hitting balls and have also worked hard on my fitness” Rohit Sharma said during the ODI series against West Indies.
Meanwhile, the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the revised schedule of the upcoming bilateral series which will comprise three T20Is and two Tests, including a Day-night Test in Bengaluru.
Last week, the BCCI had also personally reached out to Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Wriddhiman Saha that they would not be called for the Sri Lanka Test series.
“Selectors want to try some new faces. Yes, they have been informed individually by the selectors themselves. Decisions have been taken after consulting with Coach Rahul Dravid and other senior members of team management”, confirmed the top BCCI Official.
