The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has declared that the first two matches of India vs England Test series set to be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will be played behind closed doors. The association has directed its members to not allow crowds during the matches as a “preventive measure” in the wake of COVID-19.
“In view of the prevailing Covid pandemic, BCCI has decided not to take any kind of risk with the safety of the players during the forthcoming India-England Test series,” TNCA secretary R Ramaswamy said.
“As per BCCI directive, the first two Test matches will take place behind closed doors (No Spectators/Guests/Sub-Committee Members) as a preventive measure,” Ramaswamy added.
TNCA has taken this decision despite the fact that the India government allowed a 50% crowd capacity for outdoor games and events. They further affirmed that they have taken the decision in consensus with the BCCI members.
The Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had informed through a note on December 26, 2020 that Indian Government had sent out a directive allowing a 50% capacity of spectators for outdoor games.
England will tour India for a four-match Test series starting February 5 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The teams are also slated to play five T20Is as well as three ODIs.
England’s India tour will be the first international game that India will host after an excessively long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
