Former Indian Team captain Sunil Gavaskar has called skipper Virat Kohli out for his subpar performance during the ongoing India vs England Test series. Gavaskar said Kohli’s methods have been successful in helping him accumulate 8000 runs in Test cricket, they aren’t so in his current games. Gavaskar pointed out the technical errors in Kohli’s methods that are keeping him from scoring big.
“That method has been successful for him. He has got 8000 Test runs with that back and across the movement. But he is playing at deliveries way outside off stump and a little too early in the innings. This time around, the foot is somewhere else, the bat is somewhere else, which means that he hasn’t really played well,” Sunil Gavaskar said on the Sony Sports network.
“It could be about this much-talked-about word intent but in a five-day game, every batsman goes in to score runs. It’s the method that differs,” he added.
Kohli hasn’t been impressive lately. While he scored 0 runs in the first Test of the ongoing series in England, the best he has scored is 42 runs in the first innings of the second game. Kohli’s last three innings read 0, 42, and 20.
Further talking about Kohli, Gavaskar said: “When you talk about this trying to take this attack to the opposite approach, and if that is what intent is, it can get you into trouble as we saw. I think every batsman should be left alone to find his own method. This is a Test match.”
“In ODI and T20I, it’s a completely different situation, but over here, what they need to look into is get themselves in and try to play in the old-fashioned V. Play only when you have fought through,” he added.
At the end of the fourth day of the second India vs England Test series, India’s scoreboard flashed 181/6. Ajinkya Rahane and Chestwshwar Pujara scored 61 runs and 45 runs, respectively, while captain Kohli managed 20 runs and didn’t last beyond 31 balls. Mark Wood took the most wickets, three, returning figures of 51-3. Veteran bowler James Anderson remained wicketless while in form Ollie Robinson continued with adding more dismissals to his account, clinching Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma’s wicket. On the other hand, Moeen Ali removed Rahane and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja.
