The Indian Premier League (IPL) confirmed on Wednesday that the IPL 2021 Auction will be held on February 18 in Chennai. They made the announcement on their official Twitter handle.
The IPL governing body had given the eight franchises the deadline of January 20 for the retentions and release of players for the 14th edition of the tournament ahead of the IPL 2021 auction.
A total of 139 players were retained by the franchises. On the other hand, 57 players were released from their teams.
While almost all the teams retained their core squad, they did not refrain from dropping some of their strongest players. The names of the released players include MVPs like Steve Smith, Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell, Tom Banton, and Dale Steyn. All of them were released from their respective teams.
Veteran players Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga also got released from their teams. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) did not renew their contract with Harbhajan Singh, while Mumbai Indians bid farewell to Malinga as the player announced his retirement from franchise cricket earlier this month.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to decide the venue for the 14th edition of IPL. The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had said earlier that they are planning to host the tournament in India this time.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tournament had to be moved to the United Arab Emirates last year. It was held from September to November.
