Former team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has set a new record by becoming the first player in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL) to enter the 150 crore club.
The Chennai Super Kings retained Dhoni for INR 15 crores ahead of the IPL 2021 auction which will take place on February 18 in Chennai. Resultantly, the CSK skipper has now accumulated 150 crores in his IPL account.
Last year, Dhoni also became the highest-paid cricketer in IPL. He earned a total of 137 crores while competing in IPl.
Dhoni has been earning 15 crores per season since 2018, the last season in which CSK lifted the IPL title.
The franchise bought Dhoni in the auction of the inaugural season of the cash-rich tournament back in 2008 for USD 1.5 million. He was the most expensive player to be picked up by a franchise in the auction of the inaugural season of the IPL.
He received the same payment till the 2010 season after which it got raised to INR 8.2 crores per season till 2013. The BCCI then increased the fees of the first-choice player retention to INR 12.5 crore in 2014, as a result of which Dhoni earned the same till 2018. From the 2018 season, the board raised the fees to INR 15 crores.
Proving his prowess, Dhoni took the team to the finals in the 2008 season. While Dhoni has taken the CSK to the finals eight times they have played in the IPL, the skipper went on to lead the team to victory in three seasons- 2010, 2011, and 2018.
Dhoni is among the 18 players retained by CSK ahead of the upcoming edition of the tournament.
