In what could be a big blow to Chennai Super Kings’s (CSK) ambitions, Faf du Plessis might miss out on the first match of the second leg of IPL 2021, scheduled to be played on Sunday against defending champions Mumbai Indians. Du Plessis suffered a groin injury while playing for Saint Lucia Kings in the recently concluded CPL 2021. As a result, he missed out in the last three games for the franchise, including the semi-final and the final. As per a report by InsideSport, Robin Uthappa has been asked to get ready to open the innings if Faf du Plessis doesn’t recover on time.
Robin Uthappa was traded to CSK at the end of the IPL 2020. The 35-year old is yet to make his debut for the side. In the first leg of the tournament, he warmed benches as Faf du Plessis opened the innings along with Rituraj Gaekwad.
Robin Uthappa has played 189 matches in the Indian Premier League and has scored 4607 runs at an average of 27.92. He is listed among the best batsmen in the history of the league. However, his stocks have gone down in the recent past. He plied his trade for Rajasthan Royals in the last edition. He played 12 matches for the franchise and managed to score only 196 runs at an average of 16.33.
CSK, too, endured a torrid run in the IPL 2020 edition. However, they made a roaring comeback in 2021. MS Dhoni and Co. won 5 out of seven matches played in the first leg of the tournament and thus sit at number two position on the points table. Faf du Plessis finished as their leading run-scorer. In 7 matches, he scored 320 runs at an average of 64. His absence in the initial matches could take a toll on the franchise.
