The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings have added England’s senior leg-spinner, Adil Rashid to their squad as a replacement for Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson for the remainder of IPL 2021. Richardson, along with compatriot Riley Meredith, has decided to pull out of the second leg of the IPL 2021 resuming on September 19 in the UAE. He was the fourth most expensive player in the IPL 2021 auction.
It will be the first IPL stint for the 33-year-old England legspinner, who went unsold during the February auction of the IPL 2021. He is currently ranked fourth in the ICC T20I Bowling Rankings. The in-form player recently concluded England inaugural The Hundred tournament as the joint-highest wicket-taker. He represented Northern Superchargers and picked up 12 wickets from seven games in the 100-ball tournament returning the best figure of 3/12.
Rashid has played 201 T20 games, clinching 232 wickets at an economy of 7.43 and an average of 22.08. He will be the team’s third English player aside from Dawid Malan and Chris Jordan. Moreover, he is also the third spin option for the team.
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings have also signed Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis as a replacement for Riley Meredith, the franchise announced on Saturday. Ellis has been named as one of the travelling reserves of the team for the upcoming ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup. He picked up a hat-trick in the recently concluded Bangladesh series.
Punjab Kings is currently ranked sixth on the IPL 2021 points table with three wins from eight games. They will resume their campaign in the second leg of the tournament on September 21 against Rajasthan Royals at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
