Franchise Rajasthan Royals have roped in World’s No.1 T20I bowler Tabraiz Shamsi as a replacement for Australia fast bowler Andrew Tye for the entirety of the second leg of IPL 2021. The South African bowler will now be joining the squad for the tournament in the UAE schedule to start from September 19.
Earlier, Tye pulled out of the tournament citing personal reasons. He stated that he wanted to spend time with his family after a long hectic period.
“It is with great regret that I have to pull out of the remainder of the IPL 2021 with the Rajasthan Royals. It has been a long year for me which has kept me away from home for a lengthy period, and the disappointment of not making it to the World Cup squad has added to the dismay.
“Therefore, keeping my best interests in mind, I had to make this tough decision of staying at home and preparing myself mentally and physically for next year’s T20 World Cup. I am gutted that I won’t be able to rejoin the Royals family this year, but like all the fans out there, I will be cheering the team on”, said Tye.
Left-arm spin specialist Tabraiz Shamsi is an experienced T20 player, especially in the domestic circuits and league cricket. He rose to prominence for his performance in the 2015 season of the Caribbean Premier League, during which he scalped 11 wickets at 13.27 in the seven matches while representing St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
In South Africa’s domestic level, he represents The Titans, his most successful season in first-class cricket being the 2015-16 summer, in which he took 41 wickets at 19.97. Owing to his performance, he was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2016 edition of the IPL and played four games for the team.
He made his ODI debut in 2016 during a triangular series in the Caribbean. The 31-year old made his T20I and Test debut in the same year. While he has represented South Africa in 27 ODI matches, he has played 32 T20Is, and two Test cricket matches. He has picked up 45 wickets in T20Is at an average of 22.06, 32 wickets in ODIs, and six wickets in his Test appearances.
