After releasing their previous year’s captain, Steve Smith, IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals (RR) have named Sanju Samson as their captain for the IPL 2021 season.

RR has retained big guns like Ben Stokes, David Miller, and Jofra Archer. Archer was the leading wicket-taker for RR in the 13th edition of the tournament, with 20 wickets. While Stokes and Miller have been vital contributors to the team.

Indian players retained includes players like Robin Utthappa, Jaydev Unadka, and Shreyas Goyal.

Expressing his ecstasy on in appointment as the team skipper, Sanju Samson said, “It’s an absolute honour to have been announced as the captain of Rajasthan Royals. It’s a team that is so close to my heart, which I’ve been lucky enough to play for over the years, and I’m excited about the challenge that lies ahead of me as the leader of the team.

‘The Royals have had some wonderful captains over the years and I’m so grateful for all the time I’ve spent working with and learning from great leaders like Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson, Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith!! I now cannot wait to get started and look forward to the season ahead,” the Royals’ new captain added.

“We’re happy to retain the core of our squad ahead of IPL 2021. We’ve got a talented group that underperformed overall last season and will be wanting to correct that. It is a well-balanced squad and we are excited for the season ahead,” RR’s lead owner, Manoj Badale said, speaking on retentions and release of players.

“I would especially like to thank Steve Smith for everything that he has done as a leader and captain of the Royals. His contribution on the field, and his contribution off the field, especially towards the development of some of our young players, both as a captain and mentor has been immense,” Badale said thanking former RR captain, Steve Smith.

Steve Smith has played for the Royals in four season- 2014, 2015, 2029, and 2020. The star Aussie batsman has the exceptionally for the team and captained it the last season. However, the team endured a rough patch in the 13th edition of the game, finishing at the bottom of the IPL points table, triggering RR’s decision to reconsider his retention. The franchise eventually chose to release him.
