Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been signed as a substitute for New Zealand quick Adam Milne, who has been ruled out of the rest of the IPL 2022 due to a hamstring injury. Milne was injured in Super Kings’ opening match of the season, against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26, and has not played since.
Matheesha Pathirana, who bowls like his idol Latish Malinga will be difficult to pick for the batters. The round arm action will make the slower bowl more decisive. He is likely to get a chance as Chris Jordan was taken to cleaners the last match. The pacer is just 19 years old and has a huge career ahead of him. This opportunity will help him as the Indian Premier League is a stage everyone notices. This will help him get a chance for other franchise cricket and also if he performs well he can be in contention for the Sri Lanka International team.
Pathirana was a member of Sri Lanka’s Under-19 World Cup squad in the West Indies this year, where he played four matches and took seven wickets at an average of 27.28 with an economy rate of 6.16. Pathirana rose to attention first as a result of his low, slingy motion, which he shares with former Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga, and his ability to deliver pacy, late-tailing yorkers.
CSK bought Pathirana at base price:
Pathirana has only played one List A game and two T20 matches at the senior level, although he has been on Super Kings’ radar for some time. Pathirana was signed as a reserve player alongside Sri Lanka mystery spinner Theekshana ahead of the 2021 season. Pathirana, like Theekshana, was signed for INR 70 lakh at the IPL 2022 auction and is now a member of the Super Kings’ main team.
