IPL 2022: The newly formed Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise of Lucknow has appointed former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir as the mentor of the team. The two-time IPL winning skipper with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will join the yet-to-be-named franchise. The RPSG group owner Sanjiv Goenka, who acquired the Lucknow franchise for a whopping Rs. 7090 crores confirmed the development.
“Yes, we have taken him”, Sanjiv Goenka told Cricbuzz on December 18 (Saturday).
This is the franchise’s second major appointment after it announced roping in Andy Flower as the head coach of the side for a possible long-term contract.
A close aide of Sanjiv Goenka revealed that both Gambhir and Goenka are good friends and were already planning to have a cricketing association together. In fact, Gambhir played a part in the formation and planning of the Lucknow franchise with the RPSG group.
“Once the team was bought by Mr. Goenka, the relationship became formal and professional,” Gambhir and Goenka’s mutual friend said.
Vijay Dahiya, the head coach of the Uttar Pradesh state team and was previously part of the KKR’s coaching staff will also join the Lucknow franchise.
“I respect his cricketing mind and look forward to working with him,” Sanjiv Goenka said in a statement.
“Thanks a lot to Dr. Goenka and the RPSG Group for presenting me this wonderful opportunity in their setup. The fire to win a contest still burns bright inside me, the desire to leave a winner’s legacy still kicks me 24×7. I will not be contesting for a dressing room but for the spirit and soul of Uttar Pradesh,” Gambhir responded.
Gambhir played his last IPL match in 2018 playing for Delhi Capitals and in his 10 years of IPL career, he played 154 matches and scored 4218 runs at an average of 31.01 and 36 half-centuries.
