IPL 2022: Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the franchise for the forthcoming season of IPL 2022. Iyer, 27, was KKR’s most expensive buy during the two-day mega auction of IPL 2022. He also became the most expensive bid of the franchise and overtook the previous most expensive bid Andre Russell (INR 12 crores).
Iyer had left Delhi Capital’s captaincy as he was injured and had to sit out of the first leg of IPL 2022. He returned to the second leg of the tournament in the UAE and played under the leadership of Rishabh Pant.
This will be the second franchise Iyer will get to lead in the IPL. KKR was previously led by Eoin Morgan, who had led the side to the finals of the IPL 2021, which they, unfortunately, lost to Chennai Super Kings.
“We are delighted firstly to have been able to successfully bid for Shreyas in the IPL auction and to have the opportunity for him to lead #TeamKKR,” Venky Mysore, CEO & MD of Knight Riders said in a statement.
“He has impressed one and all as a quality batsman at the highest level and we are confident that he will excel as a leader of #TeamKKR” he added.
Iyer has had a good run as skipper of Delhi Capitals, after having led the side to the finals of IPL 2020, and to the playoffs in 2019. He had returned from his shoulder injury in 2021, but the tournament was postponed due to the second wave of COVID-19 in India.
“I am extremely honoured to have gotten the opportunity to lead a prestigious team like KKR,” Iyer said.
“The IPL as a tournament brings the best players from different countries and cultures together and I look forward to leading this great group of very talented individuals” Iyer added.
IPL 2022 will begin from March 27, with the matches set to be played in Maharashtra and Mumbai, the schedule will be announced subsequently.
