The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has hinted that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 will resume on April 2, 2022. The dates have not been finalised yet, but the BCCI has informed key stakeholders that April 2 will very certainly be the day, and Chennai will almost certainly be the venue.
The league will include ten teams and 74 games in total in its 15th edition, compared to 60 games and eight teams in previous editions, and the BCCI has speculated internally that the season will last more than 60 days. As a result, the final might take place around the first weekend of June, on June 4 or 5. Each side will play 14 league games, with the present structure of seven home and away games for each team remaining unchanged.
Chepauk will be the natural pick for the opening game because Chennai Super Kings are the reigning champions, but no formal decision has been made on whether their opponents would be Mumbai Indians, as has been the case in the past.
Due to COVID-19 issues in India, the first part of the IPL 2021 was held in the UAE while the second half was held in India. However, it was previously claimed that the IPL 2022 edition will be held entirely in India, and according to current sources, the event will begin on April 2nd.
The BCCI secretary Jay Shah proclaimed the IPL’s full return to India at a recent address in Chennai, where CSK celebrated their fourth IPL victory.
“I know you all are waiting to see the CSK play at Chepauk. Well, the moment is not very far. The 15th season of the IPL will take place in India and it will be more exciting than ever with two new teams joining. We have a mega auction coming up, so it will be interesting to see what the new combinations look like,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said at the function.
