IPL 2022 Schedule: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will release the complete schedule of the IPL 2022 on February 24, Cricbuzz reported on Wednesday. The matches will be distributed across four venues: Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai and at MCA International Stadium in Pune.
It is also understood that all the teams will play four games each at the venues in Mumbai and three games in Pune in the double round-robin method. Earlier, it was reported that the tournament would kickstart from March 27, but the official broadcaster Star India insisted on starting the tournament from March 26 instead.
Star backed the idea in order to set the momentum for the tournament, followed by a double-header on February 27 (Sunday). Because, generally there is one game on the opening day of the tournament, and weekdays would only have a single game too. So, the second day of the tournament on Sunday would draw a massive audience.
“We understand that a Saturday start helps the broadcaster to kick-start the league with a bang with three matches in the first weekend. A Sunday inauguration would not permit that. The BCCI and the broadcasters were in discussion over this and eventually, it could be on March 26,” a franchise official stated.
IPL 2022 Format:
Group A | Group B |
Team 1 | Team 6 |
Team 2 | Team 7 |
Team 3 | Team 8 |
Team 4 | Team 9 |
Team 5 | Team 10 |
- 14 league matches for all the teams.
- Teams will face their respective group teams twice and one team from the other group twice.
- They then play the remaining four teams from the opposition group once.
The final of the IPL 2022 is set to take place on May 29, with the venues yet to be finalized for both the playoffs and finals. Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Eden Gardens in Kolkata are also under the scheme as potential venues for the playoffs, but the final decision will come soon.
Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are yet to name their captains for the IPL 2022. Punjab Kings lost KL Rahul during the IPL 2022 mega auctions, and Virat Kohli stepped down as the skipper of RCB last season. Mayank Agarwal or Shikhar Dhawan would possibly get the role of leading the Punjab franchise.
