The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 is all set to kick off on March 26, 2022. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday, February 25, that the ten teams competing in the league have been divided into two groups of five teams each and will engage in a total of 14 matches each, 7 home and 7 away.
The virtual grouping has been done based on the number of IPL Championships won by each franchise, followed by the number of Final matches played by the respective teams.
The BCCI has decided to follow the same format for conducting the matches that it had followed in the 2011 edition of the IPL, wherein two new teams Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were included in the competition. Each team will play 5 teams twice and the remaining 4 teams only once (2 only home and 2 only away). In the second group, each team will play twice, once with the teams in their group and once with the team in the same row. The teams in the second group will only play each other once during the season.

The 15th season of the Indian Premier League would be played in a bio-secure environment at a single hub to minimise air travel, which is seen to be a major risk for the spread of COVID-19 infection, harming players and the League/matches. All the matches of IPL 2022 will be held in Mumbai and Pune.
A total of 70 league matches will be contested over four international grade stadiums. The location of the playoff games will be determined later. Four matches will take place at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium each. While three matches each will take place at Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium, Pune.
“The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will be played in a bio-secure environment at a single hub to avoid air travel which is considered as a major threat for the spread of COVID-19 infection, thereby affecting the players and the League/matches,” the BCCI explained.
