Amidst the current state of affairs in Afghanistan, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) management has assured that their Afghanistan cricketers namely Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi will be part of the SRH for the second leg of IPL 2021, scheduled to start in UAE.
“We haven’t spoken on what is happening at present, but they are available for the tournament,” he said. Speaking to ANI, SRH CEO K. Shanmugam said.
The CEO also added that the team will be departing for UAE on August 31. “We are leaving at the end of the month, August 31.”
The currents state of affairs in Afghanistan is too grim. English former player Kevin Pietersen recently had a word with Rashid Khan, during which the Afghanistan cricketer expressed his concerns over the same. Rashid Khan hasn’t been able to get his family out of the country. Flight operations from around the world have been affected at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International (HKI) airport due to the ongoing turmoil in Afghanistan.
Rashid Khan is currently plying his trade for the Trent Rockets in the ongoing The Hundred 2021.
“There’s a lot of things that are happening at home. We had a long chat here on the boundary talking about it and he’s worried: he can’t get his family out of Afghanistan and there’s a lot of things happening for him,” Pietersen said on Sky Sports.
“For him to turn up and put on a performance like this under the pressure that he is currently under… for him to be able to forget that stuff and navigate his story and continue the momentum that he has. I think that’s probably one of the most heart-warming stories of this Hundred so far,” he added.
Earlier, the Afghanistan Cricket Board clarified that the team will be participating in the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup and the available players will start their training within a few days in Kabul.
