Former Pakistan team captain Moin Khan ‘s son Azam Khan’s selection in the Pakistan T20I team for the England and West Indies tours came as a big surprise. The news was equally surprising for the 22-year old.
“I was just having my breakfast. First of all, I didn’t believe it. I thought everyone was joking. But when I saw it on social media, I literally started crying. I left my breakfast and went to meet my dad. It was a very emotional moment. Just like you see in films”, Azam Khan said on his maiden call-up in the T20I squad of Pakistan.
Azam Khan has played 36 T2o matches, scoring 743 runs. The wicketkeeper-batsman has also featured in 50 List A games amassing 239 runs.
In an interesting squad selection for the twin tours, the Pakistani selectors have experimented with a mix of maiden call-ups as well as the senior blokes.
Pace bowlers Muhammad Abbas and Naseem Shah have made it back into the Test squad. While Haris Sohail has made it into the ODI squad.
Pakistan will play three ODIs and as many T20Is in England starting July 8 spanning till July 20. The team will then square off with West Indies in five T20s, followed by two Tests.
“This is an extremely important and critical tour for Pakistan as we will be playing the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs against England as well as the T20Is against England and the West Indies as part of our preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” Chief selector Muhammad Wasim said on the squad selection.
“The Jamaica Test will count towards the ICC World Test Championship. In consultation with captain Babar Azam and head Misbah-ul-Haq, we have tried our best to maintain the winning combinations but at the same time recalled four experienced players and rewarded uncapped Azam Khan for his domestic performance, while also giving him the required confidence for the future challenges.”
