England team captain Joe Root has presented a clarification on why James Anderson would not feature in the second Test match against India commencing on February 13 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Root said that even though Anderson is currently in one of his best forms, the management has decided to rest him so that he can be well prepared for the remaining matches. However, Root expressed that no one, including himself, wishes to see Anderson out of the game considering his current form.
Anderson played an essential role in the victory of the visitors in the first Test, scalping three wickets on the final day of the first Test to hand a massive defeat of 227 runs to the hosts. He scalped five wickets in the entire match.
“With Jimmy, it gives him the best opportunity to be fit and available for those last two games. Everyone’s heart was in favour of him being available for this game but also you have to look at the bigger picture and ideally, if he is available for two of the last three, that is a huge asset for us [with] the way he is bowling and his reputation, as well as his numbers and the way he has performed in recent games,” Joe Root said.
England is considering including either Olly Stone or Chris Woakes in the playing XI for the second Test. Root said both the bowlers have their own assets to bring in the team with their availability and England would decide who between the two shall be included in the team for the next match.
“With Stoney, that means we could play with a similar balance of attack. Someone that can come in, bowl at a high pace, give us a real point of difference in our seam department. Or we can go down the route of Woaksey, which will give us great control, lengthens our batting, brings reverse swing massively into the game as well.
“So we feel like either way, whichever balanced side we go with, we are going to give ourselves a really good chance of taking 20 wickets in these conditions.”
“Someone like Stoney, he hasn’t played a huge amount of cricket but has so much potential and excitement about what he can bring to the fore. It’s taken a huge amount of time to build this squad up, but now we’ve got the opportunity to utilise it all and to have that freshness going into games like this. They’ve got a great chance now to show what they can do in an England shirt.”
