Former cricketer Deep Dasgupta feels that lack of confidence has been the major issue behind the underwhelming performances of Kuldeep Yadav in the last couple of years.
He stated that his confidence will only rise after playing games and not just but warming benches and travelling with the team. Kuldeep Yadav made his ODI comeback after two years. He played his last game against New Zealand in the ICC World Cup semi-final. Kuldeep Yadav returned with figures of 2 for 48 runs in nine overs.
“Lack of confidence has been the major issue for Kuldeep Yadav in the last two years. Confidence cannot be regained by sitting on the bench or just travelling with the team and not getting game time. It’s retrieved only by playing on the field and performing well by picking up wickets in the case of a bowler. In the first ODI, Kuldeep bowled well so his confidence levels must have been boosted by it.”
The former cricketer also added that Kuldeep Yadav had bowled a lot of bad deliveries during his spell but will improve as the series progresses.
“Kuldeep and Chahal would have got confidence after yesterday’s game, but they can still bowl a lot better. Kuldeep bowled a lot of loose and boundary deliveries during his spell yesterday. The opposition batters were not that capable of converting the average balls into boundaries. We all know that Kuldeep Yadav is capable of much more, as he has proven by his performances in the past, he just needed a boost and this performance will hopefully give him that.”
India won the first ODI against Sri Lanka by 7 wickets and has taken a 1-0 series lead. India restricted Sri Lanka to 262 in the first innings and chased down the target in just 36.4 overs.
Shikhar Dhawan played a match-winning 86-run knock off 95 balls, while Ishan Kishan and Prithvi Shaw contributed 59 and 43, respectively. India will play the second ODI on Tuesday at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
