Former Bangladesh skipper and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and former Indian all-rounder Yusuf Pathan have registered for the second edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). They are among the pool of several international big guns of the game who have made themselves available for the tournament. These include players from 11 major cricket-playing nations.
Other big names who have shown their interest in participating in the Twenty20 tournament include, Australian all-rounders Ben Cutting and James Faulkner and South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, all of whom have registered for the second edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The stellar list of names who have made themselves available for the draft will also feature names of leading players including former Indian bowling star Irfan Pathan, New Zealand’s Mitchell McClenaghan, Zimbabwe’s Brendan Taylor, and Caribbean player Nicholas Pooran. Irfan Pathan is part of the Kandy Tuskers team.
Speaking of Shakib Al Hasan’s participation, the Bangladeshi player and other players of the nation did not feature in the inaugural season of LPL since the Bangladesh Cricket Board had denied the players from participating. However, ahead of the LPL 2021 Players Draft, six other players aside from Shakib Al Hasan have registered for LPL 2.
The LPL 2 is scheduled to roll out from July 30 this year and run for three weeks. The success of the first season of the Sri Lankan T20 league has attracted the attention of a number of leading players from around the world.
The inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) was held successfully between 26th November and 16th December 2021. Jaffna Stallions became the victors of the maiden season of LPL. The tournament held in a bio-secure bubble at the Mahindra Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. It reached a wide audience as 557 million people watched the tournament through TV, digital media and traditional media outlets.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, although the last season was conducted seamlessly in a bio-secure environment, this time around there are concerns regarding the guarantee of a secure bio-bubble for players and staff amidst the rising number of cases.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenge, there’s no question,” the head of SLC‘s Medical Committee Prof. Arjuna de Silva had told ESPNcricinfo. “Last time we were in the middle of the second wave, but this time it’s a totally different ball game.”
However, SLC is confident that the second edition of the tournament will not see any drawbacks in player and staff safety arrangements for conducting another successful season of the game.
