Latest Cricket News: In what comes as a huge shocker for the Indian cricket team and its fans, Indian Men’s Team skipper Virat Kohli has announced that he will step down from the role of Team India’s T20I captaincy after the completion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. Kohli broke the news on Thursday (September 16) through his social media platforms.
In a statement issued on his Twitter account, the Indian Team skipper clarified that he will hold his position as the skipper of the Test and the ODI formats. He stated that he wishes to lighten his workload and focus on improving himself as a batsman and a skipper of the team in the other two formats.
“Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for the last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket.
“I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward,” Virat Kohli wrote in the statement announcing his decision.
Kohli was assigned the role of the captain of the T20I team of India after former Indian Team skipper and wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni stepped down from the role in 2017. Ever since then, Kohli, who is the fastest to score 1000 runs as T20I captain, has captained the team in 45 T20I matches out of which, the team won 27 games.
Under his captaincy, the team made it into the final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy and the semi-final of the 2019 ICC World Cup. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the first T20 World Cup in which the hard-hitter will be leading his team.
