MI vs CSK IPL 2021: Chennai Super Kings registered a thumping victory over the defending champions Mumbai Indians by 20 runs on Sunday. The MS Dhoni-led side also registered their first game in the second phase of IPL 2021 in the UAE. The win was orchestrated by the youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad who scored his highest score on the UAE soil by smacking 88* in the high-pressure situation.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni had won the toss and opted to bat first but that didn’t seem to click for them. CSK lost four quick wickets including the wicket of Dhoni within powerplay. All credits to MI bowlers Trent Boult and Adam Milne who shared a couple of wickets each early in CSK’s innings. CSK also suffered a jolt after Ambati Rayudu too returned back to the pavilion retired hurt after picking an injury.
However, Gaikwad stayed firm on the crease and kept the scoreboard ticking for CSK. He stitched an 84-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (26 runs off 33 balls) and revived the CSK innings. Later, Gaikwad and Bravo (23 off 8 balls) took the team total to 156 runs in 20 overs. Gaikwad remained exemplary in staging CSK’s comeback despite half the team failing to click double digits.
MI vs CSK IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians succumb to pressure:
Missing out on the services of skipper Rohit Sharma, MI batsmen succumbed to the pressure set in place by the CSK bowlers for them. Chasing a total of 157 runs, MI lost Quinton de Kock in the third over of the innings, courtesy of Deepak Chahar. Chahar cleaned both the MI openers de Kock and debutant Anmolpreet Singh and finished with impressive figures of 4-19-2.
Mumbai Indians lacked partnership on all stages despite having a good grip of the game with wickets in hands. As a result, the required run rate piled up and the task became tough. Saurabh Tiwary remained the top scorer for MI with an unbeaten 50* runs, while the other middle-order batsmen fell trap to the likes of Dwayne Bravo (4-25-3) and other CSK bowlers.

- This was the 10th time CSK succumbed to four or more wickets within powerplay, four of them came against Mumbai Indians.
- Ruturaj Gaikwad scored his fourth consecutive half-century in the UAE by hitting 88* today. Three of them came in the last three games (62*, 72 & 65*) in IPL 2020.
- Gaikwad also surpassed Michael’s Hussey’s 86 runs in 2013 to become the highest individual scorer for CSK against Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
