MI vs KKR, Match 34, IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 34th match of the IPL 2021 on Thursday. The defending champions began their UAE leg with a 20-run defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Mumbai Indians have now four wins in eight matches and currently find themselves at the number four position on the points table.
Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya didn’t play the last game due to injuries. Their absence hurt the team badly as they failed to chase down a 156-run total set by CSK in the first innings. Adam Milne and Trent Boult were brilliant in the powerplay in the first innings. They reduced CSK to 26 for 4 inside the first six overs. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jadeja and Bravo later lifted CSK to 156 at the end of the first innings.
None of the batsmen in the top five stepped up for MI during the chase. Quinton de Kock (17 off 12), Surykumar Yadav (3 off 7) and Ishan Kishan (11 off 10) failed to make an impression. Kieron Pollard who led the side in Rohit’s absence also got out after scoring 15 off 14 balls to leave MI tottering to 87 for 5. Saurabh Tiwari fought hard till the end and scored a half-century, however, there was little support at the other end. Mumbai Indias, in the end, managed to score 136 runs in the second innings, falling 20 runs short of the target.
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders are coming off a clinical 9-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last game on Monday. KKR were brilliant in all departments right from the start of the innings. Lockie Ferguson and Prasidh Krishna sent both the RCB openers back to the pavilion inside the powerplay. Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russell then broke the back of RCB by picking 6 wickets between them. None of the batsmen stepped up for RCB as they were bundled out for just 92 runs in the first innings.
KKR’s opening duo of Shubman Gill and debutant Venkatesh Iyer came out with a positive frame of mind. They attacked the bowlers right from the start of the innings. Gill scored 48 runs off just 34 balls, while Iyer remained unbeaten on 41 off 27 balls. KKR, as a result of that, chased down the score in just 10 overs. With that win, KKR has now registered 3 wins in 8 matches. They would be keen to continue the winning momentum ahead of a high octane clash against MI.
