Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has left his position as a BBC commentator. He participated in the BBC commentary team for the series against India and New Zealand. He has chosen to resign after being mentioned in the investigations into the Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
Vaughan sent a statement on his social media accounts announcing his resignation. He claimed that despite being clear about his position, he resigned for the benefit of his family.
“On numerous occasions, I have put on record my views on the issues concerning YCCC. It is always regrettable when commentary on matters off the field takes the focus away from what’s happening on the field. In view of the ongoing dialogue on the subject, I have taken the decision to step back from my work with the BBC for the time being,” Vaughan said in a statement.
“Following conversations with Michael Vaughan we’ve accepted his decision to step away from our cricket coverage. This is a decision we respect and understand. Michael remains under contract to the BBC,” the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) said in a statement.
ECB conducted separate investigations
The ECB conducted a separate investigation before charging Vaughan. Along with people like Gary Ballance, Tim Bresnan, and Matthew Hoggard, he will be the subject of a disciplinary hearing.
Rafiq alleged that Vaughan told him and two other players of Asian origin that there were “too many of you lot, we need to do something about it” before a match in 2009. Vaughan has strongly refuted the accusation.
Following Azeem Rafiq’s accusations, BBC briefly let go of Vaughan the previous year, which prevented him from traveling to Australia for the Ashes. After that, BBC immediately removed him from the air, and he didn’t come back until March of this year.
Vaughan is one of seven people accused of racism, although he did not face any charges. After the ECB conducted its own inquiry into the matter, Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) will hold a hearing in September or October.
