Australian head coach Justin Langer has hinted upon the likelihood of Mitch Marsh batting at No. 3 in the circumstance that explosive batsman Steve Smith is unable to recover before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Smith is currently recuperating from his elbow injury.
All-rounder Mitchell Marsh gave a reliable performance during the recently concluded Australia’s ODI series against West Indies, which the tourists won by 2-1 after a 4-1 T20I series defeat against the team.
Langer also praised Ashton Agar for his Man of the Match winning performance in the final ODI and his overall performance in the series.
“Certainly, Mitch Marsh has put his hand up. The No. 3 position is really interesting, depending on how Steve Smith comes up with his elbow injury. That adds real depth to our side. I also thought the way Ashton Agar played in the last ODI, he’s like a leopard in the field, and the way he batted was a real positive for us,” Langer told cricket.com.au.
The Head Coach went on to acknowledge the team’s improvement and did not shy away from expressing how impressed he was with their last outing. He asserted that the team is not lagging behind its tough rivals England and India in terms of talent for performance.
Team India is currently playing a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka and has taken a 1-0 lead. They are on the verge of adding a T20I series win to their account. Whereas, England swooped a 3-0 series victory over Pakistan, playing with a second-string team against a full-strength Pakistan team.
“We’ve gotten better and better. We have had a couple of tough series with some complications and some challenges. But it was only a few months ago that we were ranked No.1 in the world (in T20Is), and we’re very proud of that,” said Justin Langer.
Langer emphasised the importance of the Big Bash League and how it plays an important role in improving the performance of Australian cricketers while comparing it with the Indian Premier League.
“The Big Bash is a great competition to keep developing our young Australian players, that’s really important for Australian cricket. I think it’s really important that the BBL does that for us as the IPL does for India. That will help us be a very good T20 side when the boys are all available,” added Justin Langer.
