T20 World Cup Qualifiers: Veteran opener Stephan Myburgh and Northamptonshire seamer Brandon Glover return to the Netherlands’ squad for the upcoming T20 Global Qualifier B in Zimbabwe. This will be the team’s first overseas trip under new captain Scott Edwards. Kent’s Fred Klaassen and Gloucestershire’s Paul van Meekeren also joined the Dutch seam section.
Glover was the team’s top wicket-taker in the last tournament, a larger 14-team event hosted in Dubai that the Netherlands won back in 2019. Myburgh made his ODI retirement announcement last year while on the Netherlands’ tour of New Zealand, but he is still eligible for T20Is. He is competing with Vikram Singh or Max O’Dowd for the opening spot due to his strong domestic performance.
During their home ODI series against England last month, Tom Cooper played in Dutch uniform for the first time in more than six years. However, this competition would be his team’s first appearance in the shorter format since the 2016 T20 World Cup. The 35-year-old Brisbane Heat bat will provide new skipper Scott Edwards with some crucial experience (as well as a reliable off-spin option) in the absence of Somerset’s Roelof van der Merwe and Leicestershire’s Colin Ackermann, who just announced his retirement as captain.
Due to the tournament’s drastically reduced budget and the release of three county quicks to join van Beek and de Leede in the seam section, Vivian Kingma and Ryan Klein were not chosen. The other two members of the Netherlands extended squad who were left out were left-arm spinner Clayton Floyd and top-order bat Musa Ahmad.
The Dutch will play a number of warm-up games against the United States and a Zimbabwe Select XI in Harare. Before travelling to Bulawayo, where they play their first Group B match against Papua New Guinea on Monday, July 11 at Queens Club, followed by games against Hong Kong the following day, and Uganda the following day,
