On this day, India scripted one of the greatest wins in the history of Test Cricket- a Test win that got etched in the record books. After losing the first Test, India produced a remarkable comeback from the jaws of defeat in the following Test and bring parity in the Test series against Australia.
Australia started the series on a positive note, having won the first Test comfortably. The Aussies started similarly in the second Test as well, posting a huge 445-run total in the first innings. In reply, India got bundled out for just 171 runs. As a result, Australia enforced the follow-on and it looked like Australia will win the match inside three days.
However, what followed was an epic 376-run partnership between VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid for the fifth wicket in the second Test. The duo exhibited a match-winning partnership which also proved out to be the turning point of the series. Laxman went on to score 281 runs, while Dravid scored 180 before he got run-out.
India went on to score 657 runs in the second innings and gave a target of 384 runs on Day 5. The visitors started off decently before Harbhajan Singh ripped apart the Aussie batting line up. India won that game by a big margin of 171 runs.
Celebrating two decades of the achievement, VVS Laxman wrote on his Twitter handle,
“Can’t believe it’s been 20 years! Honored and humbled to have played my role in a memorable Test match. To be a part of that wonderful team was magical, as was having a fulfilling partnership with my good friend.”
