On this day in 2013, MS Dhoni claimed his third ICC title after beating England in the finals to win the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. With that title, MS Dhoni became the only captain to claim all three ICC trophies.
India enjoyed a terrific outing in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. They started their campaign with a thumping win over South Africa, which was followed by another win against West Indies. They beat Pakistan in Birmingham before registering a comfortable win against Sri Lanka in the Semi-finals.
India met hosts, England, in the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2013. However, the game was curtailed as rain played made interruptions which eventually led to a 20-over game per side.
Shikhar Dhawan enjoyed a terrific outing in the tournament and was the leading run-getter in the tournament. He scored 363 runs, while his partner, Rohit Sharma amassed 177 runs in the competition.
Rohit Sharma departed early in the final off Stuart Broad. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli then steadied the ship and added 31 runs for the second wicket. Unfortunately, Dhawan too departed off Ravi Bopara after making 31 off 24 balls.
India were still in a very good position at 50 for 2 after 8.2 overs. However, what was followed was three quick wickets in the form of Dinesh Karthik (6), MS Dhoni (0) and Suresh Raina (1). Virat Kohli, however, carried the ship forward and stitched a 43-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja to take the total to 129 runs in 20 overs.
In reply, England made an awful start, having fallen to 46 for 4. However, Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara then led the recovery and added 64 runs for the 5th wicket. However, Ishant Sharma picked the wickets of Bopara and Morgan to turn the tide in the 17th over. England eventually fell short of 5 runs.
