As per the latest reports, Ajinkya Rahane will lead the Indian Cricket Team in the first of the two Tests scheduled against New Zealand in November. Virat Kohli has been rested for the first Test. He is expected to get back into the team ahead of the second Test. In a big development, Rohit Sharma won’t take part in the Test series in a bid to manage his workload.
All the decisions were taken in the meeting held on Thursday. Earlier, it was reported that the players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Rishabh Pant, and Shardul Thakur will miss out in order to manage their workload.
During the meeting, it was first proposed that Rohit Sharma would be given the captaincy for the first Test and will be rested for the second Test. However, after contemplating thoroughly on his workload, it has now been decided that will sit out of the entire Test series.
Also, keeping in mind Rahane’s poor form with the bat, there were questions of handing the captaincy to him. However, with both Kohli and Rohit resting in the first Test, it was ideal to give Rahane the captaincy duties. Either one from Shubman Gill or Mayank Agarwal is expected to open alongside KL Rahul. Widdhiman Saha, on the other hand, is expected to be the first-choice wicket-keeper.
The first Test between India and New Zealand is scheduled to be played from 25th November to 29th November 2021 at Green Park, Kanpur. The second and the last Test of the series will be played from 3rd December to 7th December 2021 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
