In what comes as a major blow to the team, England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup owing to a lower back injury he sustained during a match in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.
“Surrey and England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a lower back injury,” the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) informed in an official statement
Curran, who is representing the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings, suffered the injury during the clash against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday (October 2) in Abu Dhabi. He was immediately taken in for scans after he complained of back pain post the fixture on Saturday. His scans revealed an injury in his back following which he was ruled out of the remaining tournament.
“Results of the scan revealed the injury. He will fly back to the UK in the next couple of days and will have further scans and a full review later this week from the ECB’s medical team,” ECB stated.
Curran’s brother, Tom Curran has been inducted into the England T20 World Cup squad as his replacement. He was earlier named a travelling reserve for the team.
Additionally, ECB has named Surrey’s Reece Topley as a travelling reserve for the team. Topley will join the England party in due course.
Meanwhile, the England cohort not involved in the IPL 2021 arrived in Muscat base earlier today. They will remain in Oman until 16 October following which they will move to Dubai for the start of the tournament.
