Former India chief selector MSK Prasad has opined that batsman Shikhar Dhawan should follow the ‘VVS Laxman’ model if he wishes to make his comeback in the T20 setup of the Indian squad. His comments come after Shikhar Dhawan was excluded from the Team India squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on September 8.
MSK Prasad explained that by ‘VVS Laxman model’ he means that whenever Laxman was axed from the squad, he always made a comeback by registering impressive scores in his upcoming matches to prove himself. He said that Dhawan needs to do the same and make his performance do the talking for himself. He also pressed that Dhawan has still a lot of time he will be spending on the field and he should use this advantage to improve his form.
“To make a quick comeback in the Indian team, what the left-handed opener needs to do is follow the ‘VVS Laxman model.’ VVS always answered you with tonnes of runs if he was dropped. That’s the way Shikhar too should approach his coming assignments.”
“The age that he’s in, he doesn’t require to go through the grind. He just needs to show his good form in whatever format he plays and when the opportunity arises, he comes back. And there’s no need to make any changes in his technique too.”
Shikhar Dhawan continues to be a mainstay player of the ODI squad but has been sidelined from the Test and the T20I set-up of the team for quite some time now. One reason why he does not find himself in the Test set-up is his conservative approach and also the cut-throat competition for the opening slot. As for the T20 format, even though he is the top-run scorer of the current season of the IPL, he failed to reserve a spot in the T20 World Cup squad. It is mainly attributed to the changing nature of the game and the emergence of aggressive players.
While Dhawan emphasises on eventually building his strike rate, the players and teams nowadays believe in giving an explosive start to the game without much delay. His approach. however, works well for the 50-over game.
While explaining the exclusion of Dhawan, the selector said that there might be some error in the communication about the whole thing and the veteran player is rather being rested for the 2023 ODI World Cup, during which if he maintains a good form, it will benefit India greatly.
“There may have been an error in terms of terminology as he (Sharma) tried to explain the role of Ishan Kishan. But there’s nothing called resting when it comes to a major event like the World Cup, where Shikhar’s experience could’ve mattered.”
