Shreyas Iyer, one of India’s middle-order batsman has inked deal with England’s club Lancashire for the forthcoming Royal London Cup tournament.
The 26-year-old will also make his debut in England’s domestic cricket by playing in the group stage of the Royal London Cup. Iyer last played in the T20I series against England in which he scored 67 runs in the opening game.
Iyer also became the first Indian player this season to have signed with England’s domestic cricket club. This also comes as a surprise as the Indian players were not permitted to play in the inaugural edition of The Hundred tournament.
Not only is he a key player for India, but he is also the skipper of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League. On joining the club ahead of the Royal London Cup, Iyer said,
“Lancashire is a legendary name in English Cricket with a long-standing association with Indian Cricket. I am extremely humbled and honoured to carry the legacy forward of greats like Farokh Engineer, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman at Lancashire”
“Emirates Old Trafford is a world-class international stadium and I am looking forward to meeting my teammates and the supporters of the Club,” he added.
Paul Allot, Director of cricket of Lancashire also welcomed the batsman saying: “Shreyas is one of the shining lights of a new generation of Indian batsman and a leader, and we’re delighted that an opportunity to bring him to Emirates Old Trafford has presented itself.”
The Royal London Cup will be played between July 22nd – August 19 this year.
