Pakistan failed to combat stiff resistance from the Sri Lankan spinners as they were bowled out for 231 in the first innings, giving the hosts a 147-run lead into the second innings. (Salman-62, Haq-32, Mendis-5/47)
Sri Lanka once again commanded in the second innings and declared their innings for 360/8, setting a mammoth 508-run target for the visitors. (De Silva- 109, Karunaratne- 61, N Shah- 2/44)
Chasing a massive target of 508, Pakistan were 1 down for 89 at Stump on Day 4. With 9 wickets in the fray on Day 5, Pakistan’s middle-order stumbled as they were bowled out for 261 and the hosts recorded a significant victory by 246 runs.
Pakistan began the day on a healthy note as Imam-ul-Haq (49) and skipper Babar Azam (81) put up a 55-run stand. Mohammed Rizwan (37) joined Azam and put up a vital partnership of 79 runs. Since then, wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals as the middle-order failed to survive the scintillating Sri Lankan spin attack.
For Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya starred in the bowling attack and registered a figure of 5/117. Ramesh Mendis supported Jayasuriya and scalped four wickets for 104 runs.
Dhananjaya de Silva was named as the Man of the Match for his brilliant century. Spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya was awarded the Man of the Series.
