Angelo Mathews was assigned the duty to lead Sri Lanka in the recently concluded T20 series against West Indies. After losing the first T20, they made a great comeback to level the series 1-1. However, Sri Lanka lost the series after losing the final T20 by 3 wickets.
The 5-match ODI series has begun and West Indies have already attained a 1-0 lead. Meanwhile, it has been reported that Angelo Mathews has decided to return home citing personal reasons. In the first ODI, he scored five runs before getting run-out. Sri Lanka posted 232 runs in the first innings, courtesy of a stellar 105-run opening partnership between Gunathikala and Karunaratne. West Indies, in reply, chased down the total in 47 overs, winning the game by 8 wickets. Shai Hope scored 110 runs off 133 balls, while Ewin Lewis scored 65 runs off 90 balls.
“Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to announce that Angelo Mathews, who is currently touring the West Indies with the national cricket team, will return home. The purpose of his return is to attend to a family matter,” the SLC said in an official statement.
