Indian women’s cricketers Sneh Rana and Shafali Verma have been nominated for the ICC Player of the Month in the women’s category award for June by the International Cricket Council. The duo has been dominated after exhibiting standout performances in the ongoing series against England. Besides the Indian duo, England’s left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone has also been nominated for the honour in the women’s category. As for the men’s, New Zealand cricketers, Devon Conway and Kyle Jamieson have been nominated along with Quinton de Kock.
Shafali Verma is likely to receive the award. The teen sensation earlier made a rollicking debut in Tests against England after scoring 96 and 63 in the two innings. With that, she also became the first Indian woman and fourth woman cricketer to score two half-centuries in her first two innings of her debut Test. In the ODIs, he aggregated 59 runs in the two ODIs at a strike rate of 85.50.
Her ally, Sneh Rana also exhibited a solid performance in her debut Test. She scored 80 runs off 154 balls to deny England a win on the final day of the Test. With the ball, she took four wickets for 131 runs, including the wickets of Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones.
England left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone has also been nominated. She finished with the best bowling figures in the one-off Test between India and England. She took 4 wickets each in both innings, finishing with the outstanding figures of 8 for 206 at an average of 25.75. In the two ODIs, she picked 6 wickets at an average of 12.16 and an economy of 3.65.
In the men’s category, the nominees for the ICC Player of the Month for June include inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final winners Devon Conway and Kyle Jamieson, and Proteas Quinton de Kock.
Opener Devon Conway smashed a double century on Test debut at Lord’s, the highest for a New Zealand batsman on debut and the third-highest ever on debut. Furthermore, he topped it up with half-centuries in his next two Tests, including the ICC WTC Final against India, to aggregate 379 runs at an average of 63.16.
Fast bowler Kyle Jamieson played a starry role in the WTC Final as the player emerged as the Player of the Match against India in Southampton. He finished the campaign with the figures of seven for 61. He played two Tests during the month, finishing with 10 wickets at an average of 17.40.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock gave a topliner performance during the series against West Indies, playing a key role in the series win. He was the Player of the Series, playing an unbeaten 141 in the first Test and 96 in the second Test for an aggregate of 237 runs at an average of 118.50. In three T20Is against the same side, he scored 135 runs at a strike rate of 142.10.
The winners of the ICC Player of the Month will be announced on Monday, 12 July.
