After playing a scintillating knock in the final T20I while opening the batting against England, Virat Kohli confirmed that he will open the batting in the IPL 2021 also. While Virat might have made the revelation recently, Mike Hesson said that the idea of Virat opening for RCB was discussed even before the mini-auctions.
“Certainly we talked about Virat opening the batting before the auction, because that came in our auction planning and how we wanted to structure our lineup. Certainly, no surprise there, delighted that he got an opportunity to open for India the other day and showed everybody what he is capable of. We certainly know that, but it is just another reminder for everybody,” said Hesson in a video posted on the official Twitter handle of RCB.
“Looking forward to Virat opening the batting with Devdutt Padikkal, left-right combination, obviously different types of players. We know Virat’s record after he gets through the powerplay, he is phenomenal,” he added.
Virat Kohli opened the batting alongside Rohit Sharma in the fifth T20 international against England on Friday. He made 80 runs off just 52 balls, helping his side reach a formidable 224-run total in 20 overs. India won that game by 36 runs.
Virat Kohli opened the batting for RCB in the 2016 edition as well. He wreaked havoc that season, amassing 973 runs in 16 games at an average of 81.08. He hit as many as 4 centuries during that season. The franchise would hope that the skipper could replicate similar performances in IPL 2021.
